8 Surprising Causes of Adult Acne

Acne can be painful and embarrassing and leave scars that take months to fade. Whether you have always struggled with acne, or you have occasional breakouts, there is much you can do to reduce the frequency and severity.

Below are eight surprising causes of adult acne.

1. Your Significant Other

Are you dating someone with a beard? Or are they a typically clean-shaven but stubbly partner (like my wife)? Their facial hair may cause breakouts and irritation around your mouth, chin, and nose. Remind them it's time to shave.

For your bearded fellows, make sure their beard, moustache, or goatee is clean and inquire about any facial hair grooming products they use. These products could also be a contributing factor for your breakout.

2. Your Smartphone

Smartphones carry oil, makeup, and a long list of germs from the surfaces you place it on while you go about your day.

Wipe your phone regularly to keep it clean and upgrade to a case that keeps your screen clean.

3. Your Hands

Just like your smartphone, your hands come into contact with many pore-clogging germs and bacteria throughout the day.

Try your best only to touch your face with clean hands and break habits, such as resting your chin on your hands while sitting.

Too much omega 3 fatty acids can cause acne

4. Too Many Omegas

Omega-3 fatty acids are skin-healthy, but there is such thing as too much of a good thing. If you overdo your omega supplements or dietary choices, you may find you are more prone to breakout and that your skin becomes red and blotchy.

Stick to 1 or 2 servings a day, and your skin will be brighter, smoother, and softer.

5. Your Bath, Body, And Beauty Products

Between your daily cleansing products, moisturisers, makeup, and haircare products, you apply hundreds of different ingredients to your body each day, and some may cause you to breakout.

These tips will help:

  • Use non-comedogenic makeup and facial products.

  • Wash your face and body only with natural skincare products.

  • Clean all makeup application tools at least once a month.

  • Wash and moisturise your face every morning, after every workout, and at the end of each day.

  • If your hairstyle allows your hair to touch your face, make sure the ingredients of your hair products are not clogging your pores.

  • Try to use natural bath, body, and beauty products, as chemicals can be irritating, abrasive, and acne-causing.

6. The City You Live In

If you live in a major metropolis, you might love your life, but the air quality is likely less than desirable.

If your skin is breaking out more than usual or isn't looking at its best, give it a beauty boost by applying a barrier cream to your skin each day. Mix it with your morning moisturiser and apply makeup as usual.

7. Too Many Harsh Skin Treatments

To improve your skin or combat the signs of ageing, you may turn to abrasive exfoliants, harsh cleansers, and invasive peels and treatments.

It is a misconception that skincare must be extreme to be effective. Remember your skin has a significant job, as the protective layer from the elements, and drastic measures can do more harm than good.

8. Hormones

Hormonal changes don't just occur in teenagers, but also in adults, which may cause an increase in painful jawline cystic acne.

Head to your doctor to talk about what dietary changes and natural supplements can help balance your fluctuating hormones.

Acne is a sign that something in your body or lifestyle is off balance. Weed out the culprits above to determine what may be causing yours.
