How Frequently Should You Wash Your Beautiful Face?

How often you wash your face depends on your skin type, but the brief answer is that a face wash is necessary at least twice a day.

Washing your face is a fundamental part of your daily skincare routine. While over-cleansing can be damaging, skipping the twice-a-day rule for washing your face can lead to many skincare problems; From clogged pores to acne, excessive oil, puffy skin and even an increase in fine lines and wrinkles.

So, how often should you wash your face? Most of us need to wash our face twice a day, in the morning and at night, to maintain a clear complexion. How often you should wash your face hinges on lifestyle and/or skin type. For example, you may need more frequent washing if you suffer from.

  • Dry or sensitive skin

  • Irritated skin

  • Acne breakouts or acne-prone skin

Or if you

  • Wear makeup

  • Workout often

How To Wash Your Face Each Day

Every day, we see that 'cosmetic and clinical research',  a 'board-certified dermatologist' and other 'skincare experts' have discovered the new "miracle remedy" for Aunty Dorothy's dry skin complaint. But have they? Really? It certainly drives up the prices.

As uncomplicated people, and for what it's worth, we think using natural products alongside simple logic is the way to go, no matter your skin type.

So, below you will find our general guidelines for when and how to wash your face each day.

I have also added some specific recommendations for distinct skin types.

Morning Cleanse: Wash Your Face First Thing

During your morning shower, you want to wash your face with a gentle cleanser that will remove any pore-clogging oil accumulated while sleeping. Follow up with a daily SPF moisturiser.

Wash Your Face Before You Go To Bed

Before you go to bed, a nighttime wash is essential, even if you are tired and had a late night.

If you wear makeup and go to bed without washing it off, you will see the negative ramifications as soon as you awake. And think of your hubby; Does he deserve to see that in the morning?

Avoid makeup wipes as they can cause dry patches on your skin. Instead, try using a water-based cleanser like Micellar Water, an extremely gentle and incredibly efficient makeup remover to clear all the gunk..

Even if you don't wear make-up, a double cleanse will wash away oil, dirt, and grime that find their way to the sensitive skin on your face during the day.

Always dry your skin with a soft clean towel and follow up with a PM moisturise.

After Your Workout

If you work out first thing in the morning, you can wait to wash your face until after you work out. However, if you work out mid-day, you should perform an extra wash of your face post-workout, even if it is just a lukewarm water rinse.

If you have dry or sensitive skin, or it is extremely delicate, you may want to wash your face to remove makeup before you work out; so that your makeup does not clog your pores as you sweat. Wash away the sweat again after working out. Then dig into your gym bag to follow up with the appropriate moisturiser.

Face Washing For Acne-prone Skin or Oily Skin

If you have acne-prone skin, combination skin, or generally oily skin condition, it is even more essential to follow the twice-a-day rule. A gentle cleanser or natural soap is excellent for a face wash without stripping away the vital natural oils in your skin.

Also, don't avoid moisturising. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it is imperative to keep your skin well moisturised. When your skin lacks moisture, it will overcompensate by producing more oil. Vicious circle, anyone?

Washing Dry, Sensitive Skin

If you suffer from dry skin or especially sensitive skin, you may find that washing your face twice a day causes some skin irritation.

Therefore, it may be best to stick to a once-a-night cleanse. It is also important to use gentle cleansers for your skin care.

We suggest using beauty products containing unique ingredients like Snail Slime, Donkey Milk or (for vegans) Sulfur. Micellar Water is also an excellent option for gentle cleansing.

Not only are our soaps gentle enough for the delicate skin on your face, but their naturally derived ingredients allow you to select a soap that will address your specific beauty needs and skin care routine.
