What Is French Triple Milled Soap?

Triple Milled French Soap Definition

French Triple-milled soaps are made from soap mixture that has been passed through stainless steel rollers a minimum of three times. This is to ensure the bath soaps have consistent colour, fragrance and texture. Read on to find out more.

The History of Triple-Milled Bar Soap

Luxury soaps and bath products are becoming a booming industry. However, some natural soaps have been around for centuries, and a perfect example of this is the French Triple-Milled Soap; like our Shea Butter enriched French Market Soaps.

These bars, also known as French milled or hand milled soap, have a unique milling process that was invented by traditional soap makers in France, as far back as the 1700s.

So what does that all mean exactly, and what precisely is involved in making these very special French soaps?

Well, allow me to explain.

How Are These Soaps Made?

In most cases, these soaps are manufactured with a combination of natural ingredients, fatty acids like fat or oil, in reaction with soda.

The milling process involves mixing these ingredients together, and a natural chemical reaction causes 'saponification'. This basically means it turns into soap, which is allowed to dry to form crystals.

Natural colours and essential oils are added to these crystals, giving the soaps their unique properties. The soap mixture is then passed through high-pressure stainless steel rollers a minimum of three times, hence the term ‘triple-milled’.

This helps to remove excess air and moisture from the mixture. It also ensures all the natural ingredients and essential oils are thoroughly blended, resulting in a smoother, more pure soap.

Occasionally, and at the discretion of the master soap-maker, the soap mixture may be passed through the rollers more than three times. Too many times, though, and the process may make the soaps too dry and less desirable. The resulting paste is then pressed into the desired soap moulds to make soap bars.
